DonatoTomato vs Givebutter

A Givebutter alternative with no platform-tip requests

Givebutter is a platform that is free to your nonprofit when you leave an optional donor tip on at checkout, or charges a platform fee if you turn tips off. Which fee applies depends on when the account was opened, and on older accounts it also varies by campaign type.

Givebutter is free to your organization when you keep its optional donor tip turned on. Turn tips off and a platform fee applies instead, and how much depends on when the account was opened: Givebutter moved to a new pricing plan on September 9, 2025, and accounts created before that date stay on the older one by default and can switch at any time; on the older plan the fee varies by campaign type and is lowest on donation forms. Either way, the platform is funded by your donors' checkout or by a percentage fee. DonatoTomato takes a transparent, flat 1% that you see in your own dashboard, and never adds a separate tip prompt to your donors. The optional "cover the processing fee" line is clearly labeled for exactly what it is.

Frequently asked questions

Is DonatoTomato free like Givebutter?

Not quite, and on purpose. Givebutter is free to your nonprofit when you keep an optional donor tip on at checkout. Turn tips off and a platform fee applies instead, and the amount depends on when your account was created: accounts created on or after September 9, 2025 are on Standard pricing and pay 3% across campaign types, while accounts created before that date stay on Legacy pricing by default, which is 1% on donation forms and more on pages, events and auctions, and can switch to Standard at any time. DonatoTomato charges a flat, transparent 1% that you see in your own dashboard, and we do not add a separate tip prompt to your donors. If a $0 platform fee matters most, Givebutter is a fair choice; if you would rather keep checkout focused on your cause, that is the trade we made.

My Givebutter account already charges 1% with tips off. Why switch?

Then the platform fee is a wash and the difference is everything around it. With DonatoTomato, donations are charged on your own Stripe account and you are the merchant of record, so gifts settle in your own Stripe balance and no money passes through us. Stripe's processing comes out of the same charge at your own rate, including the discounted rate Stripe offers verified 501(c)(3) organizations if you are approved for it. You also get a WordPress plugin rather than only an embed or a shared link, automatic IRS-ready receipts carrying your EIN and the required statement, and one form that can let donors choose which fund, program or person they are supporting.

Why would I pay 1% when Givebutter can be free?

Because the two costs are not paid by the same person. With the optional tip on, Givebutter's published pricing charges your nonprofit nothing and says Givebutter absorbs whatever donors do not cover; the ask that funds the platform sits on your checkout page, in front of your donor. Our 1% sits on your dashboard instead, and nothing is added to your donor's total to fund us. If you turn Givebutter's tips off, its published pricing is a 3% platform fee plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing (as of September 2026): $6.20 on a one-time $100 gift, against $4.20 with DonatoTomato at Stripe's standard rate, or $3.50 if Stripe approves your organization for its nonprofit rate. If a $0 platform fee is what matters most, Givebutter is a fair choice. We built for organizations that would rather their checkout asked for one thing.

Does DonatoTomato ask donors for a tip?

No. The only optional add-on at checkout is clearly labeled as an estimated processing contribution, and it is never framed as a tip. There is no separate ask that funds DonatoTomato.

Do donations go straight to me?

Yes. Donations land directly in your own Stripe account; you are the merchant of record. DonatoTomato never holds your funds.

Can donors give from their bank account?

Yes. DonatoTomato supports US bank account gifts (ACH), both one-time and new monthly gifts. Email hello@donatotomato.com to enable bank gifts for your organization. We will help you confirm the required Stripe bank-email setting before switching them on. Existing recurring gifts are not automatically moved to a bank account.
